Merga and Aprot Take Campaccio Titles in San Giorgio Su LegnanoPublished by IAAF on January 6, 2016 Ethiopia’s Imane Merga and Kenya’s Alice Aprot were the winners at the Campaccio meeting on Wednesday (6), the first IAAF Cross Country Permit competition of 2016. Merga, the 2011 world cross-country champion, won in the final sprint, crossing the finish-line in 28:50 and sharing the same time as second-place finisher Yasin Haji, the world junior cross-country champion. Steeplechase Diamond Race winner Jairus Birech took third place in 28:54. Aprot, the All-Africa Games 10,000m champion, won the women’s race in a course record of 18:56, holding off Asian steeplechase record-holder Ruth Jebet from Bahrain by five seconds. 2009 world 10,000m champion Linet Masai finished third in 19:02, 12 seconds in front of 2012 Campaccio winner Mercy Cherono.
